Reconstructive Eye Plastic Surgery:

This surgery involves correction of the defects in the eyelids and periorbital and facial tissues. The defects could have been present from birth or could result from trauma or removal of a tumor. Its main objective is to protect the vision, restore normal functioning of the eyes and manage tumors around the Eye that needs special care and reconstruction. The process includes lifting eyelids, tear duct surgery and correction of droopy eyelids, and making other necessary corrections. Most people recover from the surgery within ten to fourteen days. However, strenuous activities should be avoided during the recovery period. Droopy Eyelid (Ptosis):

As the name suggests, the eyes of people with this condition have a sleepy appearance, excessive forehead wrinkling, chin elevation, and eye fatigue. When the condition affects one Eye, it is called unilateral Ptosis. When it affects both the eyes, it is known as bilateral Ptosis. Ptosis can be temporary or permanent; it can be present at birth or acquired later in life. Droopy eyelids can result from a neurological disorder, injury, a muscle disorder, congenital disability, or simply part of aging. Stretching a muscle or tendon during a cataract or Lasik surgery can also lead to Ptosis. While it is mainly a cosmetic concern, in severe cases, it can obstruct vision. And in the case of children, if left untreated, it can affect visual development, leading to conditions like amblyopia. The treatment for Droopy eyelids is a surgical repair where the muscles of the eyelid are lifted.

Eyelid Malpositions:

Eyelid Malpositions refer to a condition where the eyelid is abnormally located, leading to in-turning or out-turning of the eyelid, making it appear unaesthetic. It can also lead to serious vision disorders. Some symptoms of this condition include watering, light sensitivity, irritation, and even crusting of the eyelid. As we age, the tissues around the eyes start to slack, leading to eyelid malpositions. Other causes include Bell's palsy, scarring, or injury.

There are four types of Eyelid Malpositions:

The treatment for this condition is reconstruction and repositioning of the eyelid through surgery. In case of dislocation in the lower eyelid, a surgical technique called the transconjunctival midface lift is performed.

Facial Spasms:
It is a neuromuscular condition where our voluntary control of the facial muscles is disrupted. There are four types of facial spasms:

Benign Essential Blepharospasm – This condition causes contractions in the muscles around the eyes. It can lead to involuntary closure of the eyes.

Hemifacial spasm– It is also a nerve disorder that causes involuntary twitching of the muscles in one side of the face. It is common in the Asian population and affects both men and women.

Meige syndrome– In this case, the muscles around the jaws and the tongue twitch involuntarily. The muscles around the eyes are also affected.

Myokymia– It the involuntary contracture of muscles in the eyelid.

Common causes of facial spasm include injury or compression of facial nerves by a blood vessel or tumor. Though there is no permanent cure, the condition can be managed using Botulinum toxin injections.

Thyroid Eye Disease:

Thyroid eye disease, also known as Graves eye disease, is a condition in which the body's immune system attacks the tissues surrounding the eyes, causing inflammation behind or around the eyes. TED is characterized by bulging of eyes and widening of the eye aperture. It can lead to double vision, swelling, discomfort around the eyes. Initially, in the active phase, the swelling around the eyes and the double vision is treated with steroids. Deformities such as the raised eyelid, prominent eyeball, or squint will need a surgical correction.

Injury and Facial Fractures:

In case of accidents or injuries, special attention is given to protecting the eyes after the life-threatening conditions, if any, are stabilized. Trauma can cause damage to eyelids, eyeballs, and orbital bone, depending upon the severity of the injury. This is the reason why a maxilla facial surgeon is always included in the trauma team.

Dacryocystorhinostomy:

DCR is a surgical process that involves creating an alternative tear drain between your eyes and nose in cases where the original tear duct is blocked. Nasal polyps, obstruction from a tumor, congenital defects, conjunctivitis, or nasal infections are common reasons why a tear duct is blocked. Everyone with a blocked tear duct does not require a DCR. The ophthalmologist decides based on the severity of the condition and the cause of the blocked tear duct.

Orbitofacial Prosthesis: Cosmetic Artificial Eyes

In some unfortunate cases, cancer leads to the loss or removal of an eye.
